Agencies of Accreditation
Before taking the ANCC or HIMSS examinations, you must have received education from an accredited school. The acceptable accrediting agencies are the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, CCNE, and the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission, NLNAC. These agencies help to ensure that the nursing curriculum is consistent with industry standards. Because the ANCC and the HIMSS both require this, you should always check this out with your school before enrolling.
Degree Options
You need a bachelor’s degree for either science or nursing before you can sit for the ANCC examination. The bachelor’s degree can be taken from community colleges, universities, or nursing schools and should take roughly 4 years to complete. Remember that being knowledgeable about nursing as a profession is directly related to your success in nursing informatics.
Additionally, most all Maine nursing informatics programs offer the master’s degree, which usually takes an additional 2 years to finish. You don’t have to have the master’s degree to begin a career in nursing informatics, but with the wealth of information and skill that you can build by having this degree, you can be assured that employers will take notice.
After your primary education is finished, the next thing to do is to enroll in a nursing informatics certificate program. This course is designed to teach you about technology and informatics and their role in the profession of nursing. After completing the 1-year program, you will be recognized with a certificate of achievement.
Internships
Internships are always a great option to consider. Not only can they help get the cost of your tuition reduced, but they also provide you with invaluable training. Many nursing informatics schools in Maine require an internship as part of the certificate program. However, even if the school does not require it, you should always consider it because it might help you to get a job when you graduate.
