Pharmacy Technician Certification in Maine - ME

Steps to Becoming a Pharmacy Technician in Maine

Though ‘sleepy’ might be the adjective most commonly used when describing Maine, that’s a bit of a misnomer. The State may no longer be the ship building capital of the east coast, but it remains a vital hub for international flights, and contains some of the busiest trade ports in North America.

Pharmacy Technicians in Maine earn quite competitive wages in relation to the States median income, and the massive influx of summer tourism provides a wealth of employment opportunities for those having trouble finding work or looking for a change of pace.

  1. Start by looking for a Maine pharmacy technician certification program that matches your needs. In Maine, community colleges are the main provider, though there are several good vocational schools and online programs.
  2. Decide if you want to pursue accreditation by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board, or PTCB, by enrolling in a program approved by them. While not necessary in Maine, it does allow you to register as a Pharmacy Technician Advanced, and brings increased employment opportunities, and a generally higher wage.
  3. If the program you are in does not provide work experience (most in Maine should) find an internship. Depending on what sort of pharmacy you are going to be in working, this is a very important part of your education.
  4. Once graduated, take the PTCB exam if you've enrolled in an appropriate school.
  5. Find a job. Right before you begin working, however, you have to apply to the Maine Office of Licensing and Registration as either a Pharmacy Technician or Pharmacy Technician Advanced, depending on if you passed the PTCB exam. You also have to complete a self-query background check through the National Practicer Data Bank (NPDB).
  6. Mail your registration, background check, and $46 dollars, to the Office of Licensing, and begin working.
