Physical therapists have become an important piece of the healthcare puzzle as our population increases and ages. The educational standards for this career field have changed over the last few years, moving from a bachelor’s degree a decade ago, to a post-baccalaureate degree today. Many physical therapy programs today are doctoral programs, and this seems to be the wave of the future.

There are only two accredited Maine physical therapy schools, and both are doctoral programs. According to the website for one of the programs, the industry currently requires at least a Master’s degree in physical therapy, but that by 2020 the industry will require that physical therapists have a doctorate, so both programs in Maine are stepping up to the plate and offering that level of education.  There are a variety of online physical therapy degrees available. Online universities allow students to work school into their busy lives by choosing the times and locations they choose to attend class.

Through campus based and online programs, aspiring Physical Therapists in Portland, Lewiston, Bangor, West Scarborough and Sanford, Maine may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the Maine Medical Center, Mercy Hospital, Brighton Medical Center and St. Josephs Hospital.
