Maryland Dental Hygienist Military Information
Military members interested in pursuing a dental career have several options. First, they can choose to become trained as a dental specialist in the military. A dental specialist is much like a dental assistant. They assist with patient care and procedures as well as administrative duties. Training for a dental specialist in the military consists of nine weeks of Basic Training in soldiering skills followed by 30 weeks of advanced individual training in dental care tasks. The 30 weeks is divided between the classroom and on the field experience.
Military members who have completed the above or are interested in pursing a dental career beyond what the military provides may consider using their GI Bill to cover the expense of dental school.
Jobs are available to military trained dental specialist both in the military and as a civilian. Additional licensure, certification, or registration may be required and varies by state.
