Medical Technologist School in Maryland

Maryland Medical Technologist Programs and Continuing Education

The first step to obtaining your certification in this field is to attend a medical technologist school in Maryland. You will have several to choose from, and you should make this choice based on reputation, experience, and curriculum, as this will be the entire foundation for your career.

In Maryland, medical technologist certification requires both education and training. In order to be certifiable, you must hold at least a bachelor degree in health sciences or clinical laboratory sciences. The bachelor degree is a 4-year option and one that will provide you with a profound foundation of knowledge on which you can build as you continue on with your career in medical technology.

While schools in Maryland often develop their own independent curriculums to provide students with the best possible chances of success, there are some courses that are pretty much universal no matter which medical technologist school you attend in Maryland. Some of these courses include:

  • Anatomy and Physiology of the Human Body
  • Medical and Clinical Terminology
  • Clinical Laboratory Applications and Procedures
  • Urinalysis and Microbiology
  • Immunohematology
  • Coagulation

Once you have graduated and are eligible for testing, you will contact the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP). They are an agency dedicated to ensuring the preparedness of students through rigorous testing. Once you have passed their test, you will be allowed to use the title of Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS).

Through campus based and online programs, aspiring Medical Technologists in Baltimore, Columbia, Silver Spring and Ellicot City, Maryland may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the Franklin Square Hospital Center, Holy Cross Hospital, John Hopkins Medicine and Prince George’s Hospital Center.
