By law, all practicing midwives in Maryland must be Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs). This means that before taking midwifery courses in Maryland, a prospective student must attend nursing school and graduate with a Registered Nurse (RN) degree. Following that, students may enroll in schools that provide graduate midwife programs of education. Many schools require that students with RNs first have at least one year of experience in labor and delivery before entering a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program.

One can expect to have both classroom time and clinical experience while studying for their MSN. Courses you will take include physiology, psychology, labor and delivery, newborn care, and client care. In the clinical aspect of your program, you will assist with prenatal care, well-woman exams, and labor and delivery. Once you graduate and become a CNM, Maryland law states that, in order to become licensed to practice in the state, you must establish a collaborative relationship with an obstetrician who has delivery privileges in a hospital. Positions for CNMs can be found all over the state in hospitals, birthing centers, universities, and home birth centers. In 2001, according to the Maryland chapter of the American College of Nurse-Midwives, there were 206 CNMs practicing within the state, and 103 CNM practice sites throughout Maryland.
