Education is the first step to becoming an Occupational Therapist. The state of Maryland requires all practicing Occupational Therapists (OTR) to have at least a Masters Degree in Occupational Therapy, although many go on to earn a Doctorate or Medical degree.
Occupational Therapy Technicians must have a high school diploma and complete an accredited Occupational Therapy Technician program.
There are several accredited Maryland Occupational Therapy courses available in the state, and those interested should check out online programs as well.
In addition to the coursework, programs include volunteer work and internships to give students some working experience and an opportunity to apply the knowledge and techniques that they have been studying,
Some of the courses included in an MS program for Occupational Therapy usually include Developmental Fieldwork, Supervision in Occupational Therapy, Physical Disabilities/Psychiatric Fieldwork, Preventative Healthcare and Patient Education, Adaptive Living Skills, Cognitive Rehabilitation, Occupational Therapy Seminar, Applied Pediatric Neuroscience and Gerontic Occupational Therapy.
One source of assistance to occupational therapy professionals is the Maryland Occupational Therapy Association. MOTA is affiliated with American Occupational Therapy Association and is a non-profit professional organization. MOTA offers members continuing education information, a job forum and newsletters.
