The coursework for a phlebotomy certification can range from 16-40 credits, and can take up to one year to complete. The typical coursework includes training in venipuncture, capillary puncture, blood specimen collection procedures, infection control, accurate labeling, ethics, legal issues, and first aid.

Phlebotomists have to renew their certificates every two years, participate in academic classes and seminars, and gain credit for each course they attend. Continuing education courses typically focus on developing Phlebotomists' skills, and advancing them beyond their core competencies.
