How to Become a Public Health Professional in the State of Maryland

Most Maryland public health careers require a bachelor’s degree.  In addition, obtaining a graduate degree will further pursue your career as a public health professional.  For example, if your area of interest is environmental health, one may receive a Bachelor of Arts/Master of Health Science (MHS) degree in environmental health sciences.  A program such as this one will prepare graduates to work in the public health sector as a researcher, administrator, practitioner, or consultant.  Furthermore, the Master of Health Science degree will train you to be more marketable in such areas as disease prevention control, water and food safety, disposal of toxic waste, and global warming.  In addition, Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programs are available to specialize in environmental health.

One example is a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program in toxicology.  Upon graduation, one may also become certified in public health by successfully passing an examination. The National Board of Public Health Examiners (NBPHE) administers the examination.  All applicants must have graduated with a Masters or Doctoral degree from a Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH)-accredited school or program of public health.  The certified public health (CPH) credential is voluntary.  The credential shows knowledge of core areas within public health.  The registration fee is currently $350 for early registration.  On a side note, there are no states at this time that require a license to practice public health.  www.publichealthexam.org
