Long term care educational programs in Massachusetts prepare students to assist people, including the elderly and people with disabilities, who require assistance with self-care and independent living.
One of these is a nurse assistant training program, which prepares students for an entry-level career as a nurse assistant or home health aide in the long term medical care field. Jobs for home care aides are among the top growth occupations for Massachusetts.
Some nurse assistant training programs run for 100 hours and are available both on campuses throughout the state and through online and distance learning classes as well. Students learn the skills needed to care for residents in long-term care facilities and hospitals. Classes cover personal patient care, patient rights and medical ethics, how to lift and turn patients, safety, infection control, taking a patient’s vital signs, record-keeping, mental health care of residents, and stress management. Clinical experience at a long term care facility as a practicum is also typically part of the learning experience. After successfully completing a course of study, students will be eligible to sit for the Massachusetts nurse assistant certification exam. In general, applicants are not expected to take an examination for admissions to these programs but are expected to have achieved a high school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED).
