The Massachusetts Department of Workforce Development reports that among health services administrators, about 57% hold a bachelor degree, 32% have completed some college courses, and 11% only have a high school education, GED, or internship experience. Most professionals working the field have some formal education in health services administration, health sciences, public health, medical management, and/or business administration. Students determined to find medical office management degrees in Massachusetts may have to settle for certificates, diplomas, and associate degrees offered by technical institutes, vocational schools, and community colleges. Students that graduate from these medical office management programs may receive the following awards: Medical Support Professional Diploma, Health Information Management Certificate, Medical Office Administration Certificate, Professional Medical Office Worker Certificate, or an Associate Degree in Medical Office Administration. These programs are typically between one and two years in length.

Fortunately, medical office management-specific degrees, diplomas, and certificates are not the only educational programs that will prepare students for a rewarding career. In fact, there are several state colleges and universities throughout Massachusetts that offer degree programs that are closely related to medical office management disciplines. For example, students may earn bachelor, master, and even doctorate degrees in majors like health services administration, medical office administration, health care administration, public health, health policy and management, and health sector management. These education programs are typically four years in length. Some actual courses featured in some of these programs include: Global Health Needs and Organizations, Health Sector Marketing, Managerial Epidemiology, Introduction to Health Facility Planning and Design, and Advanced Health Services Research Methods.
