It is important to note that the onset of speech recognition technology and electronic medical records are changing the way that patient information is documented. According to a 2010 statistical study, about 22% of physicians reported using a voice recognition platform to document their patient encounters. While the majority of physicians did not report using such a program, the study did outline the fact that speech recognition technology would be likely to have a higher rate of adoption over the next few years. This type of technology is going to create a greater demand for MTs who can become proficient with editing, which could essentially provide a lot of financial incentive for medical transcriptionists who can seamlessly make this transition.
Also, according to the National Center for Health Statistics, about 34.8% of physicians are using some type of voice recognition software in their practice, which represents a 19.2% increase since 2006. This is another indication that the way in which medical information is documented is changing. Again, medical transcriptionists who can grasp the concept of these new systems will see a greater demand for their services and more financial potential over the lifetime of their career.
