If you are interested in helping others through the science of kinesiology and touch, becoming a Massage Therapist might be a viable career option for you. New Hampshire massage therapy certification for licensure is regulated by that state's Licensing and Regulative Services division.

One does not have to be a citizen of the state of New Hampshire or even of the United States to become a Massage Therapist in New Hampshire. However, there are strict protocols and regulations that must be met, as well as examinations that must be passed.

  1. To become a licensed Massage Therapist in New Hampshire, one must be at least 18 years of age, have a high school diploma, and show evidence of good physical and mental health.
  2. Furthermore, he or she must not have been convicted of a sexually-related crime or moral crime for a period of 10 years prior to application.
  3. The applicant must have completed at least 750 hours of a curriculum from a New Hampshire massage therapy certification program that meets the educational requirements of the state (see Education section below). Official transcripts and a copy of the diploma are required. If you attended a Massage School outside of the state of New Hampshire, you must also submit a Transcript Review Packet.
  4. The applicant must take and pass the National Certification Board of Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBOT) exam, thus becoming certified by that organization.

  • As an alternative, he or she may take the Massage and Bodywork Licensing Exam (MBLEx), which is administered at Pearson Vue testing centers. Applications for this exam can be completed online at www.fsmtb.org.
  1. The applicant must have up-to-date certification in First Aid and CPR.
  2. A fee of $125 is required with submittal of the application, as is a recent 2” x2” headshot photograph.

      8. Before becoming officially licensed to practice Massage Therapy in the state of New Hampshire, one must take and pass a Practical Examination given by the state.
      9. If one is already licensed as a Massage Therapist in another state, reciprocity is recognized in the state of New Hampshire, as long as the other state's licensing requirements are comparable to New Hampshire's.
