Steps to Becoming a Massage Therapist in West Virginia

West Virginia is one of the few states that tightly regulates the massage therapy profession and grants state licensure. In order to qualify for a license in the state of West Virginia you should follow these steps very carefully. Get an education online or through an accredited school offering a West Virginia massage therapy certification program. Upon graduation from that program you should be eligible to sit for the national board certificate. Provide proof to the state of West Virginia that you have passed the national certification, pay the fees and you will be granted a license to practice as a massage therapist within the state.

West Virginia law states that you must complete a minimum of 500 credit hours of coursework in a state approved massage therapy program. After completing the formal education and experiential practice you are then qualified to take the national certification test. In order to do so you will pay a fee for the exam and your certification, and then sit for the examination. Concurrently you must obtain a licensing packet from the West Virginia Massage Therapy Licensing Board to send to your school to verify your qualifications. Finally, after passing the NCBTMB examination you must then submit proof to the state of West Virginia. Only once you have been granted a license are you allowed to practice as a massage therapist in any form in the state of West Virginia. The license in West Virginia is granted on a two-year basis with continuing education required in order to renew your license.
