After Hurricane Katrina massage therapists came to the rescue to help emergency responders as well as hurricane survivors. According to a 2005 article at massagemag.com, these volunteers offered massages to firefighters, police, and other emergency personnel ad well as to displaced individuals at Red Cross and Salvation Army relief centers.
Throughout the United States massage schools, therapists, and spas raised money to support the people whose lives had fallen apart as a result of the hurricane. Massage therapy training in Louisiana has taken on a whole new level of significance in the years following the tragic natural disaster.
State-specific professional associations
The Louisiana Chapter of the American Massage Therapy Association focuses on the same concerns as the national association. It supports its members, ensures progress in the profession, lobbies for laws that favor massage therapists, and encourages sharing among members.
Here is its address and contact information:

The American Massage Therapy Association requires continuing education to maintain membership in the organization. Over four years a massage therapist must either do 48 hours of continuing education -- theoretical, research, and experiential are all appropriate -- or submit NCBTMB or NCCAOM-ABT certification, with expiration date.
