American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA): This society was formed in 1943 and has approximately 56,000 members in 27 countries. This organization prides itself on being a national non-profit organization that is dedicated to serving the massage therapy community, as well as its members. AMTA has high standards in regards to professionalism and code of ethics. In addition, the association strives to be a leader in the advancement of massage therapy. One way is through a foundation created by AMTA to help fund research, provide community education, and offer scholarships.

The Maryland chapter of the AMTA focuses on ethics, standards, advocacy, leadership, and education. Currently the Maryland chapter has 1,310 members. This is a membership only organization with many benefits of joining the Maryland chapter. First, liability insurance coverage is available to all members. Secondly, members receive 6 issues per year of the newsletter, “Hands On” and 4 issues of the Massage Therapy Journal. Third, members have access to the “Find a Massage Therapist” national locator service. Fourth, all members will receive the “Career Guide Series”, which will aid in setting up your massage practice. Fifth, legal services are available to members through Access Project. There are additional benefits and are listed at the Maryland chapter website.
