License Renewal Requirements and Continuing Education for Massage Therapy in New Mexico

The state of New Mexico requires that massage therapists renew their licenses every two years. The New Mexico Massage Therapy Board sends renewal applications about 45 days before the expiration date of October 31. Massage therapists are responsible for contacting the board if they don’t receive the renewal form.

Sixteen hours of continuing education for expanded massage therapy training in New Mexico are required biennially. The hours must all be completed in the 24 months prior to the renewal date and additional hours cannot be carried over from term to term. However, if one is willing to pay a late fee, continuing education classes may be completed after the renewal date in some cases. Licensed therapists are responsible for maintaining records of their continuing education hours, including class and instructor information. The New Mexico Massage Therapy Board randomly audits licensees’ CEU records to verify that they’re complying with the requirements and regulations.

Continuing education units may be completed through courses, workshops or seminars in related areas of practice, or through classes at registered schools offering massage therapy training in New Mexico. They may also publish an article in a local, regional or national publication (for up to 12 hours of CEU credits.) Plus, 4 of the 16 required hours must be ethics training and technique based courses must be taught with a hands-on approach.
