Continuing Education for Massage Therapists in North Carolina

Beginning January 1, 2009 massage therapists are required to submit verification of 24 continuing education credits every two years during a renewal period.  The purpose of this requirement is to ensure that all therapists are staying current with techniques, methods, and modalities that they use in their practice.  Credits can be achieved through online courses, home study courses, attending workshops and presentations at state and national conventions, as well as speaking and/or presenting at these same conventions.  Massage therapists who do not complete this requirement will not be allowed to renew their license. 


Step by Step Massage Therapy Training in North Carolina:

  1. Complete the educational and practical requirements for either an approved program offering massage therapy training in North Carolina, an exempted community college or online school, or an out of state program (make sure this curriculum meets the standards for the state of North Carolina)
  2. Apply for and provide the required documentation for the application to take one of the offered national massage therapy exams (NCETMB, NCETM, MBLEx, or OBTE). 
  3. Successfully complete one of the above exams
  4. Apply for and provide the required documentation for licensure in the state of North Carolina; follow the proper procedure depending on if you are applying for a license by examination or endorsement.
  5. Once you are licensed, maintain the appropriate number of continuing education credits per renewal period
