There are over 9,500 registered dental assistants in Michigan. Dental assistants work full-time, part-time and often have flexible schedules. These facts, along with the minimal education dental assistants are required to obtain, make dental care a very intriguing career option for recent high school grads, those seeing part-time or flexible employment or those looking to make a career change.

How to Become a Dental Assistant in Michigan

Dental assistants in Michigan are not required to obtain any specific education or training to practice as a dental assistant. The majority of dental assistants in the United States are trained on-the-job. To become a registered dental assistant in Michigan one must complete the following:
  1. Be 18 years of age and have a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
  2. Receive a degree or certificate from an accredited dental assisting program meeting Michigan board requirements.
  3. Pass the Michigan board comprehensive and clinical exam.
  4. Apply for a license to the Michigan Board of Dentistry.
Registered dental assistants can also become qualified to perform expanded functions by completing a course in the desired functions at a CODA-accredited dental assisting program that meets board requirements. This includes radiology certification. All levels of dental assistants must also maintain CPR certification.
