How to Become a Gerontologist in Michigan - MI

With a wide variety of careers and training programs to choose from, it is very easy to learn how to become a gerontologist in Michigan. If you plan to pursue a career in this exciting field, you should be prepared to spend up to five years in a career-specific geriatric training program.

The length of your training program will rely heavily on what type of gerontology career you choose. Gerontology professionals typically work as psychologists, sociologists, social workers, geriatric nurse practitioners, geriatric nurses, nursing home coordinators, and gerontologists. Since these careers exist in different professional realms, they will all have their own separate training and certification requirements.

Geriatric psychologists, psychiatrists, physical therapists, nurse practitioners, and gerontologists spend up to five years in customized, hands-on training programs at William Beaumont Hospital, Traverse City State Hospital, and Henry Ford Hospital.  The hands-on clinical component of training may also take place in one of Michigan’s many nursing homes, geriatric mental health centers, or research facilities.

Geriatric professionals with non-clinical careers spend less time preparing for their careers. If you are in a position that does not require you to obtain a certain level of certification (e.g., Nursing Home Program Coordinator), you should compliment your geriatric education by obtaining at least two to three years of professional experience in your desired environment or facility.
