Gerontology degrees in Michigan are becoming more accessible as the elderly population balloons. As a result of the increasing demand for gerontology professionals, colleges and universities across Michigan are beginning to offer gerontology programs, which offer degrees and certificates that will get you on your way to becoming a dedicated gerontological professional.

Michigan’s gerontology schools offer degrees and courses at the certificate, master’s, and doctoral levels. Since gerontology draws from a number of disciplines (psychology, sociology, social work, and nursing), it is very important to define your career goals before you decide which programs and courses are right for you.

For instance, if you want to work with the elderly as an adult psychiatrist, the State of Michigan would require you to obtain a doctorate in Psychology/Gerontology. You would top that degree off with specialized courses that focus on the brain, metabolism and aging, and then round it all out by going through a two-year assistantship.

If you plan to become a geriatric nurse practitioner, you will only be required to obtain a Master’s degree. Michigan’s local universities offer a plethora of gerontology-specific nursing programs, which help students gain more experience in the field through gerontology-focused courses and hands-on training programs.

If you plan to work in one of Michigan’s nursing homes as an event coordinator, nutritionist, or other type of gerontology paraprofessional, a Master’s Degree in Gerontology and additional work experience in this field will be enough to get you started in this rewarding career.
