There are two sections to lactation consultant training in Michigan. First, one must have the proper education and coursework under their belts. Second, one needs practical experience in order to start a career in lactation consulting. Those looking to train to be a lactation consultant in Michigan should first get a health care related college degree, which can be either a bachelor or masters degree. Popular choices are nursing, health services, dietary services, and health administration. This is the basis of your lactation consultant training.

Once you receive a college degree, you then need special training to become a certified lactation consultant. This involves taking coursework at traditional schools or online institutions. Academic course requirements vary and can be from a minimum of 45 to a maximum of 200 hours depending upon the program chosen. Coursework will be in anatomy and physiology, sociology, nutrition, development, and more. Clinical experience is also offered in many lactation consultant certification training courses, giving the student experience to practice what he or she has learned at a health care facility within Michigan.

Through campus based and online programs, aspiring Lactation Consultants in Detroit, Grand Rapids, Warren, Sterling Heights, Ann Arbor and Lansing, Michigan may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the William Beaumont Hospital, Traverse City State Hospital, Children's Hospital of Michigan and Henry Ford Hospital.
