The profession of long term care is an umbrella that encompasses many health care disciplines. While most of us are familiar with a registered nurse or a doctor, there are a number of other specializations offered in community colleges, colleges and universities and online education programs in Michigan to consider in this field. Options include a nursing home administrator, gerontologist, physical therapist, occupational therapist, nurse’s aide, social worker, medical assistant and others in a medical team that specialize in those needing long term care in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, hospice facilities, rehabilitation centers and home care.

Keep in mind that all individuals applying for a health professional license or registration in the State of Michigan are required to submit fingerprints and undergo a criminal background check. In Michigan, nursing home administrators are required to be licensed and pass a licensure examination and have a bachelor’s or higher degree, a current Michigan RN license, or completion of an approved educational program. Some of the typical required courses cover:

  • Introduction to aging studies
  • Biology and aging
  • Aging and social policy
  • Research methods appropriate to study aging
  • Critical health issues and the elderly
  • Psychology of aging and the sociology of aging or aging and culture

Useful elective courses offered at Michigan schools with long term care programs include:

  • Health and aging
  • Counseling older adults
  • Memory loss
  • The long-term care system
