Medical Technologist School in Michigan

Michigan Medical Technologist Programs

To complete the educational requirements necessary to become a Medical Technologist, or Clinical Laboratory Scientist, in Michigan, individuals will need to earn a Bachelor’s Degree with a Medical Technology training program that has been accredited by The National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences, or NAACLS.  Make sure the program you choose to enroll in is accredited by the NAACLS to make the national certification process much simpler.  In Michigan, medical technologist certification is granted through the NAACLS national certifying agency.

While completing the Medical Technologist training program, you will focus heavily on the sciences that are related to the field, including but not limited to virology, hematology, immunology, serology, and bacteriology.  A Clinical Laboratory Scientist training program that is accredited will also include hands on training in a hospital or laboratory setting, ensuring that graduates not only have book knowledge of the job, but first hand experience with the field.  Individuals will perform routine tasks, such as urinalysis, as well as less routine procedures like parasitic testing and molecular pathology assessments.  By the time the individual graduates with the Bachelor’s Degree, the educational and experiential requirements should be fulfilled.

Every three years, it is necessary to renew your certification.  To be considered for renewal you will need to complete a minimum number of continued education credits, to prove that you are actively trying to stay aware of current research and trends.  You will also fill out a renewal form and send it in with a fee and proof of the educational credits you have earned.  Try to complete the necessary renewal steps before the expiration date located on your certification.  Failure to renew your license will result in the license becoming revoked.  In Michigan Medical Technologists are not permitted to continue practicing once the certification has expired.  Renewal forms received after the expiration date will be assessed an additional fee in order to reinstate a lapsed license.
