Michigan Occupational Therapy Degrees

Occupational Therapy Education/Courses/Schools in Michigan

To become an occupational therapist in Michigan, a Master of Science degree is necessary.  Michigan has several programs available – with both online and on campus courses.

There are several online and campus based programs offering Michigan Occupational Therapy courses that have been accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA).  When selecting a program, it is important to find one with this accreditation, so that students are eligible to sit for the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy national exam after graduating.

Most occupational therapy programs combine traditional classroom learning with Level I and Level II clinical education experiences.  Level I experiences usually include assessing and treating clients under supervision of a faculty member and a local OTR.  Level II clinical experiences usually include fulltime clinical work experience.

For admission into a Master of Science in Occupational Therapy, students must meet all general admission requirements for enrollment in the university, then meet all specific admission standards for the MS of OT program, including an undergraduate degree with pre-requisite courses.

As part of the graduate program, students are required to take approximately 30 hours of courses like Assistive Technology, Advanced Clinical Application of OT Clinical Reasoning, Administration of Occupational Therapy, Research in OT, and two fieldwork programs. All fieldwork must be completed within 24 months following the completion of academic course work.
Note:  Before students can be assigned to fieldwork, they must pass a criminal background check and drug screening.  Failure to pass either one will result in dismissal from the program, so anyone with reason to think he or she may not pass both might want to carefully consider this career choice before spending a great deal of time, money and effort.
