Physical therapy education programs are overseen by the accreditation body of the APTA, the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE).  CAPTE ensures the quality of these programs.  If wanting to become a Physical Therapist in Michigan, a licensure exam is mandatory and in order to be eligible for this exam, you must gradate from an accredited program.

There are two types of entry-level accredited programs for physical therapy: masters and doctorate.  Most programs are shifting from the master’s program to the doctorate program because of the shift of the profession to want to make all physical therapists obtain a doctorate level degree.  There are six Michigan physical therapy schools for doctorate (DPT) programs. However there are a variety of online options available. Each program lasts at least three years.   Some of these programs were initially master’s programs but shifted to the doctorate model.  Most, if not all programs will include performing research in the field as part of a graduation requirement.  In these programs students will take classes in biology, anatomy and physiology, histology, exercise physiology, and biomechanics to name a few.  Students will take lecture and laboratory classes in which all skills are taught.  In addition to classroom education, students will have clinical/field experiences working alongside licensed physical therapists in different settings (clinics, hospitals, physician offices, etc).  The Michigan programs will have students complete anywhere from 24 weeks to 40 weeks throughout their time at the institution.

Through campus based and online programs, aspiring Physical Therapists in Detroit, Grand Rapids, Warren, Sterling Heights, Ann Arbor and Lansing, Michigan may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the William Beaumont Hospital, Traverse City State Hospital, Children's Hospital of Michigan and Henry Ford Hospital.
