Careers in public health are just that, careers dealing with the care of those in the public.  Social workers, child care providers, and nursing home administrators would be a few examples of this diverse field.  The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that for medical and public health social workers, Michigan actually has the highest concentration of workers in this field with the percentage of state employment in social work being .237% (May, 2008).  In Michigan, public health careers are a much needed economic and occupational staple.

Steps to Become a Public Health Practitioner in Michigan

Child Care Provider
For child care licensing, go to the Michigan Department of Human Services.  An application package must be filled out to apply for starting a child care facility.  The application, along with fees, need to be sent to:

Michigan Department of Human Services
Cashier’s Office, Grand Tower
P.O. Box 30759
Lansing, MI 48909-8259
The licensing unit can be reached at phone number:  (517) 241-2488

The application’s contents needs to include the following:

  • Child Care Application form
  • Supplemental Child Care Center form
  • Check for fees made out to the State of Michigan
  • Licensing Record Clearance for all those applicable
  • Child Care Designee form

Fees vary, depending on how many children will be cared for.  In Michigan, if someone is caring for children within a group, the person must become licensed.  When the entire application package is submitted, it takes between three and six months for the licensing process to be completed. The facility that the children will be cared for in will also need approvals.  Fingerprinting of the applicant will also be necessary.

Social Worker and Nursing Home Administrator
The Michigan Department of Community Health has the information for the Bureau of Health Professions, Licensing for Health Care Professionals.  This department is where licensing for social workers and nursing home administrations is obtained.
