In Michigan, nursing home administrators take an exam called the NSBL to obtain their state licensure.  When the Nursing Home Administrator license is received, it is good for four months to a year, or until the date comes up for expiration.  After that first expiration date, it will be good for two years.

In Michigan, on July 1, 2005, it became required for social workers to become licensed in the state.  To become registered under the title of “Social Work Technician” someone must have the following:

  • Two years of college studies with at least four courses having been in human resources

    OR

  • 2,000 hours (1 year) supervised social work experience (under the eye of a licensed bachelor’s or master’s social worker)

To become licensed as a social worker:

  • The person needs to have a bachelor’s or master’s degree in social work earned online or through campus based Michigan public health schools
  • The degree must have been from a Council on Social Work Education (CSWE)-accredited program
  • The person must have had 4,000 hours (2 years) of supervision under the eye of a licensed master’s social worker.

Continuing Education/License Renewal

To maintain a Nursing Home Administrator License, a person must do 36 hours of continuing education study during the two years they have their license, before they renew.

For child care, the initial license is issued by the Department of Human Services, Bureau of Children and Adult Licensing.  This license will be valid for a period of six months.  A renewal inspection will then occur after that six month period.  If that inspection is passed, a regular license is issued and then the license will need to be renewed every two years.

For social work, a license renewal occurs every three years with continuing education requirements being 45 hours with one of those hours focusing on pain and symptom management.

Through campus based and online programs, aspiring Public Health Professionals in Detroit, Grand Rapids, Warren, Sterling Heights, Ann Arbor and Lansing, Michigan may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the William Beaumont Hospital, Traverse City State Hospital, Children's Hospital of Michigan and Henry Ford Hospital.
