As a part of your radiology technician training in Michigan, you will complete an externship. Because of the hands-on training you will receive, it is during this aspect of your education that you will probably gain the most overall value. Externships are designed to help students understand the concepts taught in school by showing them how they apply in the real world of radiologic technology.

Working under the direction of a certified radiology technician, you will assist in positing patients properly for images, protecting patients from excessive radiation, administering radioactive or nonradioactive solutions to patients, taking x-ray images as directed by physicians, storing and sending x-ray images for interpretation, and maintaining patient records. In addition to being a valuable piece of your Michigan radiology technician career training, your externship should also give you a sense of accomplishment for all that you have learned.

After all schooling and clinical training has been completed, you will be ready to get certified. The American Registry of Radiology Technologists (ARRT) examination will test you on your comprehension of course-related studies, as well as on things learned from your clinical externship. Passing this test not only certifies you in Michigan, but it also proves that you have successfully met the national standards set forth for radiology technicians.
