Those who are interested in helping new mothers learn proper breastfeeding techniques may wish to consider lactation consultant training in Minnesota. Education that leads to becoming a lactation consultant is twofold. Academic education, consisting of courses including lactation, health, anatomy and physiology, is the first part of the training and is usually accomplished in the classroom. Practical clinical experience, which involves working with actual living patients, is the second part of the training and is commonly carried out within a medical facility. Vocational colleges, medical facilities and other schools in the state of Minnesota offer the type of training that can lead to working in lactation consulting. Fields including nursing, human and/or health care and services and surgical technology can all relate to lactation consultant training. Facilities that employ lactation consultants will accept a bachelor degree but prefer that prospective candidates for employment possess a master degree.

Beyond this basic training, those wishing to achieve the goal of working as consultant in Minnesota also need to undergo specific training which will lead to certification as a lactation consultant. While this is not a requirement specified under Minnesota law, virtually all employers prefer (and some require) that any lactation consultants working for them possess national certification. This training can be accomplished online or in regular institutions located in Minnesota. A number of organizations in Minnesota provide lactation training, which usually consists of 45 to 200 hours of coursework plus hands-on experience.

Through campus based and online programs, aspiring Lactation Consultants in Minneapolis, St. Paul and Rochester, Minnesota may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the United Hospital, Abbott Northwestern Hospital, Children’s of Minnesota and St. Mary’s Hospital.
