Based on the prevailing “health freedom” laws that Minnesota has on the books there are no State requirements to practice massage therapy in Minnesota. There is a requirement to submit a “client bill of rights” to those who go to a massage therapist in Minnesota, but according to the Minnesota Chapter of American Massage Therapy Association the current State budget deficit has forced the closure of the Office of Complementary and Alternative Practices (OCAP) which regulates massage therapy schools in Minnesota as well as businesses that need to pass out a “client bill of rights”. This closure is expected to last until at least 2011. The State Chapter is advocating a licensing procedure in Minnesota so that the integrity of the profession and the integrity of those considering attending Minnesota massage school, can be assured. Minnesota would join 33 other states that license massage therapy if a licensing bill was passed into state law.

Out the state there are numerous programs certified by the Commission on Massage Therapy Accreditation (COMTA). You will be able to choose from day courses or night courses. Course work will cover items that range from anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, kinesiology as well as nutrition. A minimum of three trimesters will get you the training you need but some programs require four trimesters. A lot of schools also look to offer a clinical experience that will have you working out in the community before you complete their course.
