Find the right school for you
Because long term care is a whole career field, as opposed to a specific jobb, there are many different educational options open to you, depending on what sort of work you want to become engaged in.
Nursing assistants and aides working in long term care will need to take a several month certification program. These individuals do not give direct medical treatment, but instead assist registered nurses and other allied health professionals in do so. Their training mostly emphasizes communication, and quality of life care.
Nurses will still have to complete all the specifics of their profession before they can work in the long term care field. This means an associate’s or bachelor’s degree, an intensive internship, and passing national nursing exams and certification tests. Though much of your curriculum will follow a general nursing one, you’ll spend a lot of taking specific long term care and gerontology classes. In addition to the NCLEX-RN, long term nurses have to sit for, and pass, a short knowledge exam given by the Mississippi Division of Medicaid.
Nursing home administrators in Mississippi will want to earn a bachelor’s or master’s degree from an appropriate degree program. Curriculums tend to mix medical topics and science, with gerontology and studies of aging, with business, finance, and management. Though the Mississippi state board is less involved in regulation for this profession, NHA’s will still have to fulfill a 6-month practicum, complete 40 contact-hours of continuing education units every two years, and pass a nationally certifying life care facility administration exam.
