There are about 15 practical nursing programs in Mississippi, almost all offered from community colleges and universities. These programs offered by Mississippi’s LPN schools generally take 8 to 12 months to get through, though some can take longer if they are geared towards people working towards ultimately becoming an RN, or for those who can't attend school full time.

The general makeup of these programs is about half the time spent in class, learning about anatomy and other general medical subjects, and the other half is spent in clinical practice, learning hands on by taking care of patients under the supervision of an experienced LPN, a registered Nurse, or other healthcare professional.

While in school, any chance you get to shadow or intern in a specialized area like surgery, or pediatrics, you might consider taking, as it might be harder to get the time and opportunity while you are working.

Through accredited programs, aspiring LPNs in Jackson, West Gulfport, Gulfport, Biloxi and Hattiesburg, Mississippi may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the Tupelo Hospital, North Mississippi Medical Center, Baptist Memorial Hospital and University of Mississippi Medical Center.

Continuing Education for Mississippi LPNs

The Mississippi Board of Nursing does not currently mandate that LPN's need to undergo any sort of continuing education in order to renew their license or remain in good standing. You could be assigned to complete study on a certain subject if you fail to demonstrate proficiency in a certain area, and if you stop working as an LPN for some years you may be required to return to school to take a few classes, but as a general rule, Mississippi does not require continuing education.

In states where this is the case, sometimes employers assign continuing education hours themselves to compensate. Generally, this ranges from 6 to 10 hours a year, usually under the direction of a nationally recognized nursing organization.
