All Physician assistants in Mississippi must obtain a master’s degree in a field related to health or science. They must also enroll in and successfully complete an educational program through one of the physician assistant schools in Mississippi, which must be accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education (CAAHEP.)
The required master’s degree offered through physician assistant schools in Mississippi generally takes about two years to complete. Most appropriate physician assistant master’s degree programs require that applicants already have a bachelor’s degree in a related field, though students who hold degrees in unrelated fields may be eligible. Those with unrelated bachelor’s degrees are often required to take additional prerequisite courses, which may include classes like human anatomy and organic chemistry.
Curriculum for traditional coursework may include classes in medical ethics, disease mechanisms, clinical assessment and clinical pharmacology. Other classes can include patient counseling, medical writing and healthcare delivery systems.
