For every type of long-term care career, there are a number of options for long-term care education in Missouri. Most registered nurses in Missouri have an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in nursing, and 51 institutions in Missouri offer programs in nursing. However, such degrees are not required, and the state of Missouri is actively embracing other paths to acquiring nursing qualifications, such as workforce training and online coursework, in order to ease the state’s health worker shortage.
Missouri also projects 7,800 job openings for licensed practical nurses, who work with elderly or convalescent patients while being supervised by a registered nurse. Licensed practical nurses are expected to have graduated high school and have a postsecondary vocational certificate
Finally, job openings for nurse aides, orderlies, and attendants, who provide basic patient care to long-term care patients, are projected to grow 9.7% in future years. Most nurse aides in Missouri have a one-year vocational certificate or workforce training in addition to a high school diploma. There are currently 51 institutions in Missouri that offer programs for nurse aides, orderlies, and attendants.
Nursing home administrators in Missouri must be approved and licensed by the Missouri Board of Nursing Home Administrators. Nursing home administrators must have a high school diploma and three years' experience in health care administration, two years of postsecondary education in health care administration, or training in the elements of nursing home administration.
