Find the right school for you
The first, most critical step to becoming a nursing informatics professional in the state of Missouri is to earn and obtain a license as a registered nurse in the state. In Missouri, this means that one must graduate from an approved education program in nursing, which will include both formal classroom and clinical educational components. Once one has successfully completed the program, the candidate must sit for and pass the NCLEX certification examination. After this, the candidate is then able to apply for licensure in the state of Missouri as a registered nurse.
At this time, the successful candidate will seek out additional training in informatics. While no specific Missouri nursing informatics certification in order to practice nursing informatics, it is recommended that the candidate seek certification in informatics nursing through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (AMCC). This certification ensures that the candidate has been properly trained in informatics nursing. The requirements for sitting for this certification examination include obtaining at least a bachelor’s degree in nursing, with an additional 30 hours of informatics continuing education within the past 3 years.
In order to accomplish this, most nursing informatics programs in Missouri are master’s level programs. These programs fulfill the requirements for the nurse to then be able to sit for the AMCC informatics nursing certification. Even though most nursing programs are two-year programs, the graduate level nature of the informatics nursing programs means that the nurse must first complete a bachelor’s degree program in nursing.
