How to Become a Registered Nurse in Missouri

  1. Complete one of three educational programs: a Bachelor of Science degree from a four year college or university, an associate of science degree from a community or junior college, which takes two to three years to complete or a diploma program offered through a hospital or medical center, which takes up to three years to complete.  Accelerated Bachelor of Science in nursing (BSN) degree programs exist for those who already have a bachelors degree in another field and wish to pursue a career in nursing.  These are typically 12-18 month programs.  All degree programs include courses in biology, chemistry, human anatomy, human growth and development, and nutrition.
  2. Apply for admittance to an approved nursing program.  In order to be admitted, you will need to pass a background check and a drug screen.  In addition, some programs also require a dosage calculation test.  You cannot become a registered nurse in Missouri if you have been convicted of a felony.  Core nursing courses will begin upon admittance to Missouri RN programs and consists of mostly clinical and hands on training.
  3. Consider a specialization in the field of nursing.  Specializations allow a registered nurse to choose a primary work setting, health condition, or population that best suits their personality, strengths, interests, and lifestyle.  Emergency room nurses, pediatric nurses and public health nurses are a few examples of specialization.  Advanced specializations may require additional education.  Four advanced specializations exist within nursing: clinical nursing specialists, nurse anesthetists, nurse-midwives, and nurse practitioners.
  1. Graduate from one of the chosen Missouri RN programs.  The Missouri State Board of Nursing requires graduation from an approved nursing program prior to applying for a state nursing license.
  2. Pass the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX), which is administered by the Missouri State Board of Nursing.
  3. Submit an application to obtain a Missouri state nursing license through The Missouri State Board of Nursing.
Evaluate job options.  Depending on where you are considering working, there may be sign on bonuses and other incentives.  Orientations and additional training could be required.  Ask a lot of questions and consider observing before making a final decision.
