Military Information

Registered nurses serve as key members at military hospitals and clinics across the country.  Some military nurses also work in mobile field hospitals or in sick bays aboard ships.  They may also serve on airplanes and assist with the transfer of patients when the need arises.  Civilian nurses work in hospitals, clinics, higher education facilities, corporations and home care facilities.

Registered nurses in the military may provide some or all of these services

  • assist physicians in treatment of patients
  • provide support to physicians during surgeries
  • give medication as prescribed by physicians
  • care for patients
  • supervise other nurses, aides, and personnel

Registered nurses desiring to work in the military should be able to remain calm under pressure, exude self-confidence, make quick decisions, and express ideas clearly.  Job training is provided and varies in length and content.  A career as a registered nurse exists in four branches of the military: Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, and Navy.  Current service members considering a medical career can use their GI Bill to gain the necessary education and training.  They may also transfer their GI Bill to a spouse interested in becoming a registered nurse.
