Become a Dental Assistant in Montana - MT

By an allied health world contributing writer
Published: January 23rd, 2010

There are around 1,000 registered dental assistants in Montana. This number of dental assistants may or may not include dental auxiliaries. A dental auxiliary is the official term for a dental assistant in Montana. Although the population of Montana as a whole is not near as great as other states in the country, there is still a great need for dental workers.

Steps to Become a Dental Assistant in Montana

The Montana Board of Dentistry does not require licensure for dental assistants. Dental auxiliary is the official term for dental assistants, as defined by the Montana Board of dentistry. Dental auxiliaries are limited in what functions they can and cannot perform. Dental auxiliaries must complete one of the following:
  1. Graduate from a CODA-accredited dental assisting program
  2. Receive instruction and training by a licensed, practicing dentist
  3. Receive instruction and training in a board-approved continuing education course
Dental auxiliaries in Montana who wish to operate radiologic equipment or perform radiologic procedures must complete additional education.

For a complete list of dental auxiliary requirements and what functions are and are not permitted, visit the Dental Assisting National Board website (www.danb.org).
