Education Through Montana LPN schools

Working under the direction of a doctor or registered nurse, licensed practical nurses (LPNs) provide one-on-one bedside care to patients.  Taking vital signs, collecting blood samples, applying dressings, and observing patients for adverse reactions to medications are just a few of the duties the licensed practical nurse performs.  Montana requires licensed practical nurse candidates to graduate from a state-approved programs offered through Montana’s LPN schools.  It’s through these employment-focused programs that LPNs are prepared to carry out their diverse responsibilities.

Montana’s licensed practical nurse programs usually require two years to complete, leading to an associate’s degree.  Curriculums emphasize mathematics and science throughout.  Coursework includes algebra, chemistry, anatomy / physiology, pharmacology, gerontology and leadership practices.  Classes are supplemented by independent study, lectures, simulated demonstrations and practice in several skill laboratories.  Clinical work takes place under instructor supervision, allowing students to apply their newly acquired skills in a variety of “real world” health care settings like hospitals and clinics. Licensed practical nurses can look forward to support after graduation as well.  Montana boasts an active student nurse association (montanastudentnurses.org) that features a job board for recent graduates and alumni, plus well-established ties with the Montana Nurses Association.

Through campus based and online programs, aspiring LPNs in Billings, Missoula, Great Falls, Butte, Bozeman and Helena, Montana may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the Bozeman Deaconess Hospital, Kalispell Regional Medical Center, Northern Montana Hospital and St. Patrick Hospital and Health Sciences Center.
