Candidates interested in pursuing a career as a Medical Assistant will spend one year of study to earn a certificate or two years to earn an associate’s degree. Because of the rural nature of much of state, online courses will help students pursue their medical assisting training in Montana in a timely and efficient manner.

Medical Assistants must communicate clearly with patients and other medical personnel, so good communication and interpersonal skills are beneficial. Basic mathematics skills such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division are important for both administrative tasks and clinical needs. Accuracy in measuring, weighing, analyzing, and coordinating various types of information is critical. Technology is also very important, so computer literacy is a must. Administrative responsibilities may include recordkeeping, accounting, coding medical records, and processing insurance claims.

Other issues to account for in planning for an education in Medical Assisting include additional expenses for uniforms, lab fees, miscellaneous lab supplies, stethoscopes, and blood pressure cuffs.
