The Bureau of Labor Statistics found that the average medical transcription salary in Montana in 2009 was approximately $32,110 per year, equaling an overall average of $15.44 per hour. However, even more interesting was the fact that some MTs in Montana did report earning in excess of $44,340, about a 28% increase over the state’s average income for this profession.

When considering a career in medical transcription, it is important to identify factors with the potential to influence your annual income. One of these factors is experience, which is directly related to productivity. As most medical transcriptionists in Montana are paid based on production, this is probably the greatest salary-affecting factor.

In general, most new MTs can type anywhere from 85 lines per hour to 125 lines per hour of straight transcription. However, MTs with just a few years of experience may exceed 250 lines per hour, which could essentially make a difference of $10 per hour. As you can see, medical transcriptionists are able to use their skills to create their own customized level of income and this is probably one of the best reasons to pursue a career in medical transcription.

Here are a few average salary figures throughout Montana:

  • Billings: $28,000
  • Missoula: $33,740
  • Great Falls: $27,000
