Receiving certification in the state of Montana can be done through a predetermined curriculum at a community college or other type of nationally recognized educational institution. The certificate last for three years and must be renewed at the end of the three-year window. A 30 unit continued education requirement must be fulfilled before the renewal can proceed. Classes recommended for the continuing education requirement are those that the transcriptionist feels can make up for any lapsed knowledge in medical technology and definitions, computer technology, or English.

Because of the independent contractor type of work that medical transcriptionist field requires, it becomes necessary to keep up with all changes in technology.
