In order to seek certification in nursing informatics in Montana, there are a few steps that one must follow:

  1. Complete a bachelor of nursing degree.  Though the majority of registered nurse programs are two-year programs, a certification in nursing informatics requires at least a bachelor’s degree in nursing.
  2. Complete all requirements to become a licensed registered nurse in the state of Montana.  There is not a Montana nursing informatics certification available. However, one must sit for and passing the NCLEX certification exam, as well as filling out the appropriate application for licensure as a registered nurse in the state of Montana, available from the state board of nursing.
  3. Complete 30 additional hours of continuing education in the area of informatics.  In Montana, this education is typically available in the form of a master’s degree or a graduate certificate in the area of nursing informatics.
  4. Apply to sit for the nursing informatics certification exam, available through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (AMCC).  This certification ensures that the professional is well schooled and well prepared in the area of nursing informatics.

Once completed, the individual will be certified in informatics nursing in Montana.
