Montana Pharmacy Tech Certificate – MT

Steps to Becoming a Pharmacy Technician in Montana

For one looking to become a pharmacy technician in Montana, there are several requirements that must be met.  Montana is one of the few states that require national certification in order to be licensed as a pharmacy technician.  Although one can work as a pharmacy technician without a national certification, a national certification test must be passed within 18 months after registering as a pharmacy technician with the state.  The educational requirements include a high school diploma or GED, and typically completion of an online Montana pharmacy technician certification program afterward.  The completion of a certificate program is a prerequisite to national certification itself.

In order to become a pharmacy technician, one would take the following steps:

  1. Enroll in a pharmacy technician training program.  Although enrollment in a pharmacy technician training program is not required for taking the examination, it adds a valuable credential that several employers will look at positively.  While enrolled, it is recommended to work as a pharmacy assistant in Montana for job related experience. Also, most training programs are short (1 year) and their courses and preparation will help ensure that one successfully passes the national certification exam.  This is especially important in Montana where national certification is required to work as a pharmacy technician.
  2. After preparation from a pharmacy technician training program, one would take one of the national pharmacy technician certification exams.  There are two major national pharmacy technician certification exams: the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board Examination (PTCE) and the Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians.  It is up to the trainee which exam he or she wishes to take, as both exams are recognized by the Montana Board of Pharmacy.  If the trainee successfully passes the exam, he or she becomes a Certified Pharmacy Technician.
  3. Once a pharmacy technician has become certified by passing one of the national examinations, he or she would register with the Montana Board of Pharmacy.  It should be noted that registration with the Board as a pharmacy technician-in-training may occur before the exam is taken, as there is a grace period of 18 months to pass the examination from initial registration.  Registration is $60.00 and there are annual renewal requirements.
  4. There are also continuing education requirements that must be met in order for one to maintain their Certified Pharmacy Technician credentials.  The continuing education requirements include 10 hours of training per year to maintain ChPT credential.  There are no continuing education requirements from the Montana Board of Pharmacy for one to maintain their pharmacy technician license.
