Montana offers panoramic views of everything from snow-peaked mounts to lush valleys and flowing rivers. Its diverse geography features many wide-open spaces, some home to national parks such as Glacier and Yellowstone. Skiers enjoy the slopes at Big Sky Resort, Great Divide and Big Mountain. Tourism is an important part of the state’s economy, however, ranching, farming and oil and coal mining play key roles. In addition to its wide-open spaces, Montana has one of the highest concentrations of physical therapists in the U.S. and job growth and strong demand will most likely continue, according to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics. Annual mean Montana physical therapist salary is $56,000. Organizations with the highest demand for physical therapists are acute hospitals, rehabilitation centers and orthopedic settings. Physical therapists are not permitted to practice in Montana in any manner without a current active Montana license.

To obtain a license in Montana, physical therapists must have a degree from an accredited physical therapy program and pass two exams. The first exam required for licensing is the Montana Physical Therapy jurisprudence exam, an open-book examination covering current Montana physical therapy statutes and rules. Applicants must also pass the National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE) for physical therapists and physical therapist assistants. This computer-based test is developed and administered by the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy.
