How to Become a Radiology Tech in Montana - MT

Once a Montana radiology tech training program has been completed, individuals are eligible to sit for national certification.  Montana does not require that radiologist assistants obtain Board licensure. The Board does require radiology assistants to be certified by a national organization to practice in the State. Montana accepts certification from the following organizations: The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists or the Certificate Board for Radiologist Practitioner Assistant (CBRPA).  Certification in advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) is also required.

In addition to a Radiologist Assistant certification, the Certificate Board for Radiologist Practitioners Assistant also offers a more advanced Radiologist Practitioners Assistant certification.  The radiologist Practitioners Assistant is a title that reflects advanced skill and training in the field.  To qualify, radiology techs must be ARRT or CBRPA certified and have a bachelor’s degree (does not have to be in radiology). At least three years of supervised radiologic assistant experience is mandatory in order to be eligible to sit for the Radiology Practitioners Assistant certification examination.

Montana Radiology Technician Licensure & Renewal

The Montana Board of Radiologic Technologists is the licensing board in the state if Montana. They are charged with regulating the practice of radiology in the state. In order to register with the Board an individual must complete an application and certify that he or she has completed a Board approved radiology technician program and passed the a certification exam. A $60 application fee is also required.  Unlike, radiologists who are required to apply for licensure, radiology techs must only register with the Board annually.  Candidates who have completed a Montana radiology tech training program, but have not taken the ARRT examination may apply for a temporary permit to practice with the Board. This can be useful for individuals who have graduated and obtained employment, but must wait for the certification examination testing date to arrive.

Practicing radiology techs must complete a registration renewal every year with the Montana Board of Radiologic Technologists. Re-registration can be completed online and evidence of AART certification is required for renewal. The renewal fee is $50.

After passing the radiologic technologist certification exam, radiologist assistant technicians are required to register their certificates annually with the ARRT.  The ARRT requires holders of the radiologic technologists certification to complete 24 continuing education credits every two years. Along with continuing education requirements, radiologic technicians must also comply with the ARRT's rules and regulations and ethical standards, which guide the practice.

A certification option, in addition to the ARRT certification, is the Certification Board for Radiology Practitioner Assistants. radiologic techs who have their bachelors degree and have completed at least five years of supervised experience are eligible to sit for the Radiology practitioners assistant certification exam.  After achieving certification Radiology Practitioners Assistants radiology technologists must register biannually. Biannual registration requires verification of 24 continuing education credits.  Contact the Board for specific requirements.
