How to Become an RN in Montana

To practice nursing in the state of Montana, individuals must complete a number of education, certification, and licensing requirements before they can be employed as a nurse.  Fortunately for would-be nurses, the nation’s nursing shortage has prompted an increase in accessible, convenient, and accredited Montana RN programs.

Educational programs offer a range of degrees in nursing, as well as diplomas and certificates at institutions throughout Montana.    Upon completion of an approved nursing degree or diploma program, candidates must take and pass the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) in order to be licensed in the state of Montana.

Visit the Montana State Board of Nursing’s website or offices to obtain an NCLEX application and instructions.  Candidates will be required to fill out the application, have official transcripts from their nursing degree/diploma program to the State Board of Nursing, and pay a $100 exam fee.

Once the application is approved by the Board of Nursing, Montana candidates can schedule their exam date and location in a number of cities throughout the state.  The exam covers rudimentary nursing practices and knowledge required for practice in Montana.

The Montana State Board of Nursing will receive candidates’ exam results within 48 hours of test completion.  The Board will notify candidates of their results via email or hard copy, and will issue a state nursing license if the candidates passed the exam successfully.

Montana Sate nursing licenses all expire on December 31 of even numbered years. Each nurse shall submit a full renewal application and a $100 renewal fee prior to expiration to keep their Montana state license valid.

Montana Nurses’ Associations
The Montana Nurses Association (MNA) represents Registered Nurses in the state of Montana, and is a founding member of the national union for registered nurses, the National Federation of Nurses.  The MNA provides professional networking and continuing education opportunities for nurses, and undertakes legislative involvement on issues affecting the nursing profession in Montana.

Montana Student Nurses’ Association
The Montana Student Nurses’ Association (MSNA) is a valuable networking and job-search resource for nursing students in the state, with chapters at college campuses throughout Montana.  Members must be enrolled in an accredited nursing program, and have the opportunity to attend state conventions of the NSNA and MNA.
