The State of Nebraska’s department of health and human services licenses, certifies, and registers various health professions and occupations but at this time does not license or require gerontologist-specific certification.
Many gerontologists do work in assisted-living facilities as nursing home administrators, an occupation that does have to meet requirements for licensure by the Nebraska Department of Health. An Assisted-Living Facility Administrator must have successfully completed training consisting of a total of at least 30 hours in the following areas: resident care and services, social services, financial management, administration, gerontology, and rules, regulations and standards relating to the operation of an assisted-living facility. Verification of completion of training must be submitted to the State of Nebraska, Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Public Health, Licensure Unit, PO Box 94986, Lincoln, NE 68509-4986.
In Nebraska, the Associate of Applied Science degree program of study meets Nebraska Department of Health requirements for licensure as a nursing home administrator. The program includes study in general education, accounting, and business administration, in addition to the specialized health care administration courses required by the Nebraska Department of Health. In addition, students complete four months of training (totaling 720 hours) in a long-term care facility under the supervision of a professional administrator.
