Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Program in Connecticut - CT

Neonatal nurse practitioner programs in Connecticut consist of graduate nursing education and can be found both online and within colleges and universities in the state. Registered nurses in Connecticut who already have a bachelor’s degree may study to obtain a master’s degree. Those who have a master’s degree may opt for a post-master’s certificate or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree. Following graduation, prospective NNPs are required to pass a certification examination in the neonatal nurse practitioner specialty area prior to becoming certified and licensed to practice in Connecticut.

Classes that students will encounter in neonatal nurse practitioner programs include nursing science, nursing research, assessment of neonates, neonate physiology, neonate pharmacology, and statistical and quantitative methods.

Besides taking classroom courses, NNP students in Connecticut must also complete clinical training requirements through local hospitals or medical facilities. Examples of such institutions in Connecticut include Masonicare Health Center in Wallingford, Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center in Hartford, Yale-New Haven Hospital in New Haven, St. Vincent's Medical Center in Bridgeport, Connecticut Children’s Medical Center in Hartford, Norwalk Hospital in Norwalk and Bridgeport Hospital in Bridgeport.

A recent survey of neonatal nurse practitioners across the United States found that most worked in Level III NICUs (Neonatal Intensive Care Units) located within general and children’s hospitals, so these clinical experiences may lead to networking to find a paid position after graduation.
